TÜBİTAK Basic Sciences Research Institute (TBAE) is a research center that supports knowledge production in basic sciences, conducts pioneering research and encourages interdisciplinary scientific interaction. As TBAE, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of the universe and the laws of nature and to put scientific discoveries at the service of society and technology through our studies in basic science fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology.

To expand the frontiers of science, we focus not only on theoretical research but also on applied sciences, acting as a bridge that transforms basic knowledge into advanced technology. We develop international collaborations by bringing together scientists from Türkiye and abroad, and organize research programs and training activities that accelerate the production of scientific knowledge.

Our primary goals include providing an inspiring environment for young researchers, promoting a culture of science and making Türkiye a center of scientific research. To this end, we organize advanced seminars, summer schools, workshops and science for society programs to maximize the sharing of knowledge.

Driven by the vision of "Horizons of Science", TBAE continues to work with determination as a pioneering research institute that encourages scientific curiosity, educates the scientists of tomorrow and increases Türkiye's competitiveness in basic sciences.

TBAE

History

2024

At TBAE, research groups have been established in the following thematic areas, primarily in Nuclear Physics, Quantum Physics. TBAE conducts research in the fields of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Quantum Physics, Cosmology, General Relativity, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, Photonics, Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics, Bioinformatics, Biology and Genetics, Computational Sciences, Quantum Chemistry and also prepares project proposals for TÜBİTAK and EU programs.

2024

2018 - 2023

TÜBİTAK TBAE is being re-established with determination and perseverance within the scope of the development goals of our country and in line with the will of Mr. President in order to adapt to the rapid developments in the fields of basic science in the world and to provide Türkiye with scientific competitiveness.

2018 - 2023

2011 - 2017

On July 15, 2011, the Institute was affiliated to TÜBİTAK Informatics and Information Security Advanced Technologies Research Center (BİLGEM). On December 3, 2015, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave instructions to revive the Institute, and on October 7, 2017, the Institute was removed from the BİLGEM organizational chart and directly affiliated to TÜBİTAK Presidency.

2011 - 2017

1997 - 2010

During this period, TÜBİTAK TBAE, which continued its active activities at Boğaziçi University Kandilli campus, carried out important research at the international level in the fields of physics and mathematics, and organized numerous summer/winter research and training schools.

1997 - 2010

1990 - 1996

Since 1990, the Basic Sciences Research Institute has continued its activities within TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM). In 1992, the Department of Biology was removed from the Institute and transformed into the Institute of Gene Engineering and Biotechnology, and in 1996, the Institute was directly affiliated to the TÜBİTAK Presidency and moved to the Kandilli campus of Boğaziçi University, where it continued its activities in the fields of physics and mathematics. (Separate institutes for the fields of chemistry and earth sciences were established within MAM at a later date; the Institute of Chemical Technology and the Institute of Earth and Marine Sciences with their current names).

1990 - 1996

1968 - 1989

TÜBİTAK established the Applied Mathematics Unit within the ITU Faculty of Construction in 1968 to support basic and applied research activities in natural sciences. This unit was moved to TÜBİTAK Gebze campus in 1972 and continued its activities as the Applied Mathematics Unit of TÜBİTAK Marmara Scientific and Industrial Research Institute. In 1981, TÜBİTAK Basic Sciences Research Institute (TBAE) was established in order to ensure that these research activities are carried out at a higher level and in a wider scope. Important research was carried out in the fields of physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and earth sciences, and efforts were made to establish a research tradition in our country.
